SERIES 1: Dr Arthur Gilder (James Bolam) persuades his son Tom (Michael French) to follow in his footsteps and together they work at the iconic cottage hospital in sleepy Ormston. Tom's wife Deborah (Jenna Russell) is chairman of the Parish Council and with an ever-engaging population, including hospital nurse Linda Cosgrove (Tracey Childs), her policeman husband Len (Peter Gunn), publican Phyllis Woolf (Maggie Steed) and Reverend Brewer (Clive Swift) there's never a dull moment to be had.
SERIES 2: Tom sets out to find the parents of an abandoned six year-old deaf girl whilst wife Deborah not only deals with the unwelcome arrival of her mother but faces the prospects of arranging a wedding for her in Ormston.
SERIES 3: Phyllis is stunned when her absent husband reappears after six long years. Len and Linda are anxious about becoming foster parents. Meanwhile, Tom and Arthur's relationship deteriorates when Tom is offered a job in New Zealand.
SERIES 4: Deborah and locum doctor Donald (Richard Wilson) set up a blood bank at the hospital to ensure there is ready supply for emergencies. But news of a serious accident involving Tom sends the small community into a spin.
