Sadistic Count Stephen Arrowsmith (Paul Muller) tortures and murders his unfaithful wife Muriel (Barbara Steele) and her lover (Rik Battaglia) then removes their hearts and stores them in an urn, kept in his house.
Many years later, the count remarries Muriels mentally unstable sister Jenny (Barbara Steele) who inherits Muriels fortune. Jenny experiences nightmares and horrid visions and this coupled with Arrowsmiths determination to drive her insane make for a volatile relationship. The ghosts of the murdered Muriel and her gardener lover return to wreak their bloody revenge.
Although not Steeles most sophisticated film, it is possibly her most entertaining, with a continuance of the tried and tested - possession and revenge theme. Only 27 at the time of production, Steele is captured at the height of her beauty. The dual roles were no doubt very challening, with some of her most powerful performances exacted without dialogue.
Aka The Faceless Monster and Amanti dOltretomba, Nightmare Castle also features critically acclaimed film music composer, Ennio Morricones spine tingling music score.
