South Vietnam, 18th August 1966. In the gathering dusk 108 young and inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers were separated and surrounded by an overwhelming force of more than 2500 battle hardened Viet Cong guerrillas and North Vietnamese soldiers. The well armed and determined foes attacked repeatedly from all directions. Each successive and savage attack was repulsed again and again by the courageous diggers however their situation seemed hopeless with ammunition fast running out and another enemy battalion massing for the final assault. They bravely fought for their lives in the pouring rain amid the mud and shattered landscape of a rubber plantation called Long Tan.
