At the height of the French Revolution, Citizen Robespierre and his Head of Secret Police Chauvelin (Martin Shaw) are keeping the guillotines busy with innocent aristocrats, peasants and priests. But there is one problem - the daring and mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel, who continues to stage courageous rescues. Chauvelin is sent to England to discover the identity of the mystery man.
Once there, he meets his former lover, the beautiful French actress Marguerite (Elizabeth McGovern) who is married to a foppish English aristocrat, Sir Percy Blakeney (Richard E. Grant). Marguerite reluctantly gives Chauvelin information to find the elusive Pimpernel but realises she has unintentionally put her husband in danger. Can she warn him before it’s too late?
