Joseph L Mankiewiczs justly famous 1949 feature is a romantic puzzler with a sting in the tail. Three women, Deborah, Lora-Mae and Rita start out on a picnic trip about a boat one day, but upon boarding, they are handed a letter. The letter is from their friend Addie, who informs them shes left town with one of their husbands. But they wont know which husband it is until the day ends. The film exposes the womens various fears, dreams and hopes with extraordinary skill, humour and sensitivity.
Mankiewicz was awarded best director and best screenplay at the 1949 Oscars for this feature. The film was pivotal in the careers of the three female leads: Jeannie Crain, Ann southern and Linda Darnnell. Kirk Douglas is also a stand out in his supporting role as a humble school teacher.
