From master of the nouvelle vague, Claude Chabrol, comes Le Beau Serge (Handsome Serge), regarded as the first film of the French New Wave movement. Returning home to the secluded provincial town of Sardent after a long absence, theology student FranÇois is struck by how little has changed?with the exception, that is, of his long-time friend Serge. Once a promising, extroverted architect, Serge has deteriorated into a depressive alcoholic, plagued by self-doubt and numbed by an unhappy marriage and family life. As FranÇois attempts to rescue his friend from his misery, he delves deeper into the town's malaise and the reasons for his sudden return to Sardent become known.Financed by his then-wife's inheritance, and shot on location in Chabrol's childhood village of Sardent, Le Beau Serge displays openly the influence of Hitchcock and Italian neo-realism. Stars Jean-Claude Brialy, GÈrard Blain and Bernadette Lafont would continue to work with Chabrol throughout their careers, becoming forever associated with the French New Wave. With Le Beau Serge a new film movement would begin, a movement which would change the face of filmmaking forever.
