A handsome young drifter finds work at a roadhouse and falls in love with his boss's young wife. Driven by greed and sexual passion, the adulterers plot to murder the woman's old husband before it all goes horribly wrong. Master director Luchino Visconti utilises his trademark gritty naturalism and sublime melodrama to evoke barren landscapes, driven characters and sexual candour in a film widely regarded as the pioneering work of neo-realism. Banned by a scandalized Church and fascist censors, Ossessione, though liked by Mussolini, was heavily cut by the censors and eventually destroyed - luckily, Visconti concealed a copy of the negative, the source of the modern print. Adapted without permission from the James M. Cain novel The Postman Always Rings Twice, the film was not shown outside Europe until the mid-1970s due to copyright infringement. This lovingly restored print finally allows Visconti fans to witness the master auteur's finest cinematic achievement.
