Region 4 (NZ)
Adapted for the screen by George Bernard Shaw from his original hit play, Pygmalion tells the story of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins before they got the Lerner and Loewe treatment.
After the lovely but low-class flower-seller Eliza Doolittle (Wendy Hiller) meets Professor Henry Higgins (Leslie Howard) her life changes forever. Having wagered his friend Colonel Pickering that he can change the cockney-accented street urchin into a proper lady of society, the pompous Higgins begins a series of lessons on elocution, posture and grooming, treating the young Eliza like a laboratory rat in his grand social experiment. But will it be too late before he realises that she is a woman, too?
