The story centers on Ted Stroehmann (played by Ben Stiller), a socially awkward guy who still pines for his high school crush, Mary Jensen (Cameron Diaz). After a prom night disaster years earlier, Ted hires a shady private investigator (Pat Healy, played by Matt Dillon) to track her down. But when Healy meets Mary, he falls for her too—and lies to Ted about her life to keep her for himself. Chaos (and hilarity) ensues as more suitors emerge, each with their own wild approach to win her over.
